Transportation
We have now been in the Netherlands for over a week. It's been a fun, exciting an interesting trip.
We've been using a variety of methods of transportation. Some wiling, some not so willing.
We flew to Amsterdam, took a train to Arnhem, walked to our Air BnB. Walked to the bike rental shop only to find out it was closed and we had to phone ahead of time. So we had to switch plans on the fly, walked to a bus stop and took a bus to a museum where we walked around again.
The next day we were able to rent our bikes and we felt a lot more mobile and free. Though biking around Arnhem proved to be interesting with scooters and far more experienced bikers blasting past us.
We got a few warnings but overall people seemed willing to go flying past us, giving is a second look sometimes as we chatted together in English.
We biked into country-side, biked along rivers and canals and through forests. We got to see original Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet and others. Our artist granddaughter was in her glory. We saw churches and spent one sobering day at a gravesite of soldiers from WWII. Our one granddaughter said it was a sad day but they recognized the seriousness of what happened and the sacrifices made by some very young soldiers.
Then we had to give up our bikes and walk to the train station, took a train, then a ferry, then rented bikes again and biked down to the place we are staying now on the beautiful island of Terschelling.
We are leaving this place tomorrow and then, once again, bikes, ferries, trains and walking to get to the next place we are staying. This will be our last leg of the journey and it's going by far too quickly!
I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our trip.
